Hurghada has more than twenty dive sites, and the honest truth is that only some of them suit a new diver. The famous deep wrecks and open-blue pinnacles you see on posters are advanced dives. A great first-week reef is a different thing: shallow, sheltered, easy to enter, and rich enough that you surface wanting to go straight back down. Here are the ones we actually run beginners on, and the ones to save for later.
What makes a dive site beginner-friendly
Four things. Shallow depth, so your Open Water limit of 18 metres covers the whole site and nothing is off-limits. Mild current, so you drift gently rather than work against the water. An easy entry and a clear layout, so you always know where the boat is. And good coral and fish life shallow, so the best part of the reef is exactly where a beginner spends the dive. Every site below ticks these boxes. You can see this at a glance on each site page: the dive-profile chart draws the reef and shades anything below your certification, so a beginner site shows no shaded zone at all.
El Fanadir · the reliable first reef
El Fanadir is where most of our guests do their first real dive. It is a long fringing reef just 25 minutes from the marina, sheltered from the wind by its own length. The sheltered side has a sandy plateau at 8 to 12 metres that we use for training and gentle first dives, while the wall stays within easy Open Water range. Turtles show up on most dives. If we could only recommend one beginner reef, it would be this.
Gota Abu Ramada · "the Aquarium"
Gota Abu Ramada earned its nickname honestly. It is a shallow coral block, maximum 18 metres, completely surrounded by sand, which concentrates every fish in the area into one spot. Bottom time is generous because the depth is friendly, and the fish density makes it a favourite for first-time divers and photographers alike. Calm, shallow, and unforgettable.
The Giftun sites · easy diving with variety
The reefs around the Giftun Islands give a beginner variety without depth. Sandy plateaus, gentle walls, and coral gardens mostly in the 5 to 15 metre range. The captain picks the specific Giftun site each morning based on wind and how busy the popular spots are, so you get the calmest option on the day.
Turtle Bay · shallow and full of turtles
Turtle Bay is a gentle sandy bay with seagrass beds where green turtles graze in 8 to 12 metres. There is almost no current and nothing deep, which makes it one of the most relaxing dives in the area and a strong choice for a nervous first diver who wants a near-guaranteed turtle.
Prefer to skip the boat? Shore diving
If boats and early starts are not your thing, shore diving on a house reef is the gentlest way in of all. You walk in from the beach at your own pace, there is no crossing, and you can stay as shallow as you like. It is also the cheapest way to log more dives during a course.
The sites to save for later
These are worth the wait, not a beginner's first week. Abu Nuhas and the Salem Express are wrecks that sit deep and need an Advanced certification and a calm head. Carless Reef and the El Mina wreck involve depth, open water, or both. There is nothing wrong with wanting them, they are some of the best dives in the Red Sea. But the Advanced Open Water course is a two-day step that opens all of them, and it is far more fun once you have a few relaxed reef dives behind you.
Start shallow, then go anywhere
The pattern that works: spend your first days on El Fanadir, the Aquarium, and the Giftun reefs building comfort, then let the wrecks and the deep sites be the reward. When you want a plan built around your dates and your level, just tell us and we will map it out.
