A Red Sea endemic, yellow with fine diagonal lines and a black band across the eyes that gives it the name. Like most butterflyfish it feeds on coral polyps, picking at them with a narrow snout built to reach between branches.

They pair for life and are almost never seen alone. If you find one, the partner is within a couple of metres.
