Mustard-yellow blades with white tips, growing in flat plates and nets on the shallow reef. Despite the shape it is not a stony coral but a hydroid, related to jellyfish, and it carries the stinging cells to prove it.
Contact produces an immediate burn and a welt that itches for days. It grows precisely where a snorkeller or a new diver is most likely to brush against it, in the shallowest, brightest water.
