Diving with kids in Hurghada · what works at what age

PADI Bubblemaker (8+), Discover Scuba (10+), Junior Open Water (10-14), Junior Advanced (12+). Honest take on what's age-appropriate, what's marketing, and what we'd let our own kids do.

Diving with kids in Hurghada works well from age 8 with the right program. The PADI age progression is sensible · they've thought about it longer than we have · but the marketing around 'family diving' often blurs the lines between programs that look similar but have different purposes.

Here's what actually fits at what age.

Age 8-9 · PADI Bubblemaker

Pool-only experience. Confined water, max 2 m depth. The instructor stays in arm's reach the whole time. Duration: 30-45 minutes underwater after a brief skills session.

This is genuinely fun for an 8-year-old who's comfortable in the water. It's also genuinely safe · the pool is shallow, the instructor is in physical contact distance, and the equipment scales down (smaller masks, smaller BCDs, lighter tanks).

We run Bubblemaker at the pool of partner hotels in Hurghada (the Steigenberger and Pickalbatros pools both work). €60 per child. Includes a PADI Bubblemaker certificate.

What it doesn't include: any open-water dive. The PADI standard is firm on this · 8-9 year olds are pool only.

Age 10-14 · PADI Discover Scuba Diving (open water)

From age 10, kids can do the full Discover Scuba Diving program in open water · same content as adults, max 12 m depth, instructor in arm's reach. €45.

This is the right age for the first 'real' dive. Kids at 10-14 typically have the focus to follow a brief, the swimming ability to be safe, and the curiosity to actually engage with the reef. We run them on the gentler reef sites · El Fanadir or one of the Giftun sandy plateaus · with conditions chosen for ease.

For a kid who loves it after Discover Scuba, the next step is the Junior Open Water Diver course (€330, 3 days, max 12 m for under-15s, max 18 m at 15+). The course content is identical to the adult Open Water · same skills, same theory · just with a depth restriction until they turn 15.

Age 15+ · full PADI Open Water

At 15, kids cross over from Junior Open Water to full Open Water · same card, just removes the depth restriction (now 18 m worldwide). Most teenage divers are stronger and calmer in the water than adults of equivalent experience. We've run plenty of 15-17 year olds through full Open Water on a one-week family trip with no issues.

From 15+ they can also do the Advanced Open Water course (€290, 2 days, 5 dives, opens up 30 m).

What we'd recommend

A family of four with kids aged 9 and 12: Bubblemaker for the 9-year-old (€60, half-day pool session), Junior Open Water for the 12-year-old (€330, 3 days), 2-tank boat days for the parents (€45 each). Total budget for a one-week family diving holiday: roughly €1,400 across the four. Hotel and flights separate.

A family of four with kids aged 6 and 8: Bubblemaker only for the 8-year-old (the 6-year-old is too young for any PADI program). Snorkelling for both kids on the family boat day. Boat dives for the parents. Honestly, kids under 10 are usually happier snorkelling than diving · less gear, more freedom, no pressure.

Important caveats

Kids need to genuinely want this. Pushing a reluctant child through Discover Scuba Diving creates bad memories and risk. The instructor will pull the dive if the child is anxious, but you should pre-screen at home · would they be willing to swim a 200 m freestyle in a calm pool? Are they comfortable putting their face underwater for 30 seconds without panic? If yes, they're ready. If no, do snorkelling first and try again next year.

Medical clearance is required from age 10. The PADI Junior Open Water medical statement is short and most kids pass without doctor input. If anything is flagged (asthma, ear surgery, ongoing medication), get the home GP to sign before you fly · we won't dive a child without the signed form.
