Carless Reef

The wall dive · 75 minutes north, two coral pinnacles surrounded by deep blue, the most consistent shark sighting site in our rotation.

Carless Reef is a pair of coral pinnacles rising from deep water 75 minutes north of Hurghada. The dive is a wall plus pelagic experience · we drop on the eastern side of the southern pinnacle, drift along the wall to 25 m, then cross the channel between the two pinnacles in the blue. White-tip reef sharks patrol the channel, eagle rays cruise the deeper sections, and the soft-coral cover on the wall is among the densest in our rotation. Advanced Open Water minimum.

Topography and dive profile

Two oval coral pinnacles separated by a 30-metre channel. The southern pinnacle is the larger of the two, rising from 38 m to 8 m below the surface. The northern pinnacle tops out at 12 m. We drop on the windward (eastern) wall of the southern pinnacle, drift north along the wall, then cross the channel in mid-blue at 18-22 m. The crossing is the highlight · open blue water on one side, sheer wall dropping to 38 m on the other, eagle rays and white-tips cruising through.

The wall itself is festooned with red and purple soft coral, gorgonians, and overhangs sheltering glassfish. The deeper sections (28-35 m) are the territory of resident giant napoleon wrasse and the rare grey reef shark. Currents can run · we time the dive to slack and never push divers against current here.

What you'll see

  • White-tip reef sharks
  • Grey reef sharks (rare)
  • Eagle rays
  • Tuna
  • Barracuda
  • Big napoleon wrasse

Who it suits

PADI Advanced Open Water minimum. Open Water divers stay above 18 m on the upper pinnacle and skip the deep section · we still bring them but the experience is different. Nitrox 32 highly recommended for the bottom-time gain at 25-30 m. Comfort with mild current essential.
