One of the most recognisable fish in the Indo-Pacific: a body of clean diagonal blue and yellow stripes, a dark mask across the eyes, and a yellow tail. Adults reach about forty centimetres and hold a territory around a coral head with caves in it.

The change from juvenile to adult is total. Young fish are dark blue with white concentric rings and were once described as a separate species.
