A metre and a half of muscle built around a jaw of long teeth, silver enough to disappear against open water. Adults hunt alone; juveniles form the shimmering schools that hang over a reef like a cloud and part around a diver.

The reputation is unearned. Barracuda are ambush hunters that strike at fast reflective movement, which is why the only real advice is to leave a shiny watch or a dangling camera clip out of sight.
