Up to seventy-five centimetres, heavy-bodied, with teeth that crack coral and sea urchins. For most of the year it is simply a large fish going about its business, and it is worth watching because it turns over rubble and other species follow it to feed on what it uncovers.
Nesting is different. A guarding female defends a cone-shaped territory that widens upward, so swimming up to escape takes you further into it. The way out is sideways, horizontally, watching the fish.
