Unmistakable: a chocolate-brown eel ringed in narrow white bands from head to tail. Unlike its relatives it has pebble-shaped crushing teeth instead of fangs, because it specialises in crabs, shrimp and urchins rather than fish.

It is also the most placid moray on the reef, slow-moving and largely indifferent to being watched, which makes it a favourite of photographers.
