White spots on a dark back, a long snout shaped for digging molluscs out of the sand, and a tail two to three times the length of the body. Eagle rays cruise in open water beside a reef wall, often in loose groups of three or four, and they beat their wings like a bird rather than rippling like a stingray.
The tail carries venomous barbs at the base, but the animal is shy and uses them only against something holding it down. Divers who keep their distance are simply ignored.
