Boat diving

Default choice

Variety, more dive time per day, pelagic chances, social day on the boat. If you're only diving one or two days, pick boat.

Shore diving at our house reef

04FAQ

Common comparison questions

Which is cheaper · boat diving or shore diving in Hurghada?

Per dive, boat diving is cheaper · €22.50 per dive on the standard 2-tank day (€45 ÷ 2) vs €30 per shore dive at our house reef. Per session it's reversed because shore is half a day vs boat being full. If your budget is tight, the 2-tank boat day at €45 gets you more dive time per euro.

Why is shore diving more expensive per dive than boat diving?

Counter-intuitive but real. Boat diving has economies of scale · same boat, same crew, same fuel for 8-10 divers means the per-diver cost is low. Shore diving requires hotel pickup, gate permit at the resort beach we partner with, full guide attention for a smaller group, and more turn-around time per dive. The €30 covers genuine cost · we're not extracting margin.

Will I see better marine life on the boat or from shore?

Different. Boat diving offers variety (different reefs each day, big pelagic chances on the longer-transit days, occasional shark, occasional whale shark in season). Shore diving at our house reef offers depth in a single reef · resident turtles, reliable octopus, the best macro within an hour of Hurghada, frogfish in winter, leaf scorpionfish year-round. Photographers favour shore; first-time visitors usually favour boat.

Is the surface swim at the house reef a problem for new divers?

Around 30 metres in calm water, on your back, in fins. If you can swim 200 m comfortably (the PADI Open Water requirement), you can do this. We brief the technique before you enter and stay alongside. The actual workload is less than walking up a flight of stairs.

Can I combine boat days and shore days on the same trip?

Yes · most multi-day visitors do exactly that. The shore-dive day is a useful 'rest day' in the middle of multiple boat days · half a day, gentler depth profile, easier on the body before flying home. We schedule it on day 3 or day 4 of a 5-day trip by default.

Is shore diving safer than boat diving?

Comparable. Different risk profiles. Shore diving has the surface-swim entry (longer, but in calm sheltered conditions). Boat diving has the boat journey (the most statistically dangerous part of any diving day) and deeper potential profiles. Both are well within recreational risk envelopes when run by a competent operator. We've never had a serious incident on either.
