Named for the fused beak of teeth used to scrape algae off hard coral, taking the coral skeleton with it. The rock is ground up in a second set of throat teeth, digested for the algae, and passed out as sand. The crunching is audible on every dive.
Most species change both sex and colour as they mature, so the drab fish and the brilliant one are frequently the same species at different stages.
