Another Red Sea and Arabian endemic, and one of the larger angelfish at around forty centimetres. The body is a dense stipple of blue-green over darker ground, crossed by a single wide yellow bar, and the fine speckling differs from fish to fish.

They eat sponges and algae and are shy compared with the emperor angelfish, tending to keep coral between themselves and a diver.
